1915 Astoria Train Station Renovation
The original 6,000-square-foot Astoria depot is a rare Prairie School–influenced railroad station, designed by Thomas D’Arcy McMahon, whose work includes the Great Northern Railway and the iconic Many Glacier Hotel in Glacier National Park. While Prairie School architecture is more commonly seen in residential designs, McMahon’s interpretation for this depot gives the building a unique presence in regional rail architecture, grounding it in clean lines, thoughtful proportions, and enduring character. In 1987, the depot was donated to the Columbia River Maritime Museum. MCM Construction Inc. refurbished all existing radius-top steel windows, as well as exterior wood windows and doors, to national historic standards. In 2013, the renovated structure reopened as the Barbey Maritime Center for Research and Industry, a modern, functional space that celebrates both its architectural heritage and the region’s maritime legacy.
